What Is 24/7 Hourly Home Care?

Hourly home care assistance is generally provided in two 12-hour shifts per day. For example, 8am-8pm and 8pm-8am. This can mean 4-8 different caregivers are on schedule. It can also result in overtime for caregivers who work four shifts a week (48 hours), and the care is billed hourly. Caregivers are expected to be awake at all hours. This care costs more than live-in care because you are paying for an awake caregiver around the clock.

When Is 24/7 Hourly Home Care Appropriate?

We usually recommend hourly home care if your loved one:

1. Does not get up too often during the night but lacks the cognitive awareness to ask for help, especially if there are safety risks if they get up unsupervised.
2. Gets up frequently during the night and needs hands-on assistance and/or cueing.
3. Does not have an appropriate space or area for a caregiver to sleep at night.
4. Opposes the idea of anyone else living in their home.

What Is 24/7 Live-In Care?

Live-in care provides a more consistent caregiver schedule, with fewer caregivers coming in and out of the home, for clients who cannot or prefer not to be left alone but do not require intensive assistance or oversight. Live-in caregivers work 3-7 days a week. They are expected to get 8 hours of sleep at night in a private spot in a room separate from the client. They also need organic downtime during the day to meet their own personal care needs as well as the client’s.

Usually, a schedule includes 1 or, at most, 2 different caregivers. Caregiver time-off is planned well in advance so the agency and/or family can identify appropriate replacement coverage. If a client needs help during the night, the caregiver will assist. If these episodes become frequent, Guardian Angel will work with the family and client to revise the plan.

Live-in caregivers maintain their own homes. The client pays for their groceries. Live-in services are charged at a daily rate.

When Is 24/7 Live-In Care Appropriate?
